Great discovery is the realization of something obvious£» a presence staring us in the face, waiting until we open our eyes. - Michael Polanyi
1. Nuclear Feelings
In 1960 one of my patient, 31years old business tycoon(chebol)
told me that he found his nucleus even when he drank
a glass of water and a few years later when I saw a
film of interview of Miss Mun by Carl Rogers, I observed
Miss Mun was reproducing her Nuclear Feelings on the
spot. When I was reading ¡®Letters¡¯ of Tahui who is the
great Suhn master of Song dynasty in China 12th century,
I came cross the words ¡°When you remove ¡®something stuck
in your chest( äôëìñýÚª),¡¯ you are enlightened.¡±
In western psychoanalysis and psychotherapies, they
talk about complex(Jung), central conflict, central
issues, nuclear dynamics, central nuclear dynamics,
major motivation, nuclear emotional constellation. Recently
core emotion also. All these are objective description.
However, the term Nuclear Feeling is subjectively felt
emotion. This feeling can only be felt by empathy from
heart to heart, can not be transmitted by words. To
help the patient to remove his or her Nuclear Feelings,
the therapist must remove his or her own Nuclear Feelings.
2. How to achieve perfect
empathy
Taopsychotherapy is the fusion of Tao and western psychotherapy
and the final goal of psychotherapy. By studying western
psychotherapy you can better understand the Tao. By
studying and practicing the Tao you can understand better
and improve your practice of psychotherapy. Tao practice
is the removal of Nuclear Feelings or love and hate
by seeing your mind by the help of your master but mostly
by yourself. Psychotherapy is to achieve this by the
help of a therapist. The best way is to meet a good
therapist and understand your Nuclear Feelings and then
combine psychotherapy with Tao practice. This combination
is Taopsychotherapy. The perfect neutrality is wu-wei,
perfect purification of mind, emptiness, compassion.
Resistance in psychotherapy is caused by countertransference
of the therapist.
3. Fasting of the Mind(
ãýî±)
¡¸Zan Kien Shih(Man in
the World) Associates with other men ¡¹- Chuangtzu
¡°I venture to ask what that fasting of the mind is.¡± and
Kung-ni(Confucius) answered, ¡°Maintain a perfect unity
in every movement of your will(concentrate).
Do not listen with your ears. Listen with your mind. Do
not listen with your mind. Listen with Chi(spirit, Ѩ).
Hearing stops at your ears. Mind stops at verification(concept)!
But the spirit is empty and waits for everything to come
in. The Tao(reality) gathers into emptiness.
The emptiness is the mind fasting(purification of the
mind).¡± (Italics are author¡¯s version)(Fig. 2).
