Dear Dr. Choi,

My deep condolences to you, students and junior colleagues of Dr. Rhee on the loss of your master teacher! I have been informed of his passing by others but appreciate your official communication on behalf of the Korean Academy of Psychotherapists. Although we all experience sadness and a sense of loss when someone passes away, I¡¯m certain that the loss of your master teacher than other senior colleagues has more impact on each individual and the community of psychotherapists. I have known him probably longer than most of you since my young age as a father of my best friend, not as a psychiatrist or master teacher. I ignored his psychiatrist¡¯ comments when I was young but began to pay attention a bit to his comments as I became a psychiatrist myself. I have gotten to know him more personally too.

I hope you all take this occasion as another opportunity to celebrate on his long, accomplished life. I have marveled at his strength, both physical and mental, having endured many hardships including multiple cancers and a loss of his only son, just to list a few. He had kept his spirit as well his chin high and always moved forward. He always had ideas about many things, an optimistic view of himself and others, though he may be critical of others in a hope that they respond to him and improve. I may not understand his views and thoughts well but I am sure he has a place in the history of psychiatry, if not the whole world but at least in Asia and Korea. I hope the Korean Academy of Psychotherapists continue to carry the legacy of Dr. Rhee, by further studying and developing his Taoism psychotherapy. I also appreciate help and devotion by you, Dr. Kang Sukhun, Dr. Jung Changyong and many members of the Academy for assisting Dr. Rhee¡¯s family, especially his life time companion, Dr. Kim Dongsoon in difficult times. I¡¯m sorry that I¡¯m not able to attend the funeral services but my thoughts are with you and Dr. Rhee¡¯s family.

All the best,

Wun Jung Kim, M.D., M.P.H.
