Dear Dr. Rhee,

Were you, are you, my friend or my nemesis? My collaborator or my opponent? My Brother? My Father? Or my Teacher?

As is typical of you, you were available as all these to me and soundly refused to be called any.

And you always refused titles and labels, divisions and separations, concepts and abstractions. You even refused to make your beloved Tao Psychotherapy into a theoretical system as you knew it would others astray from what was most essential: living reality, the sacredness of the individual, the preciousness of life and relationships, and the importance of knowing ourselves and loving one another. And all this you did not just teach, you lived, not just in principle but in immediate reality with each and every person in this room.

The rest of the world knew you as a warrior, a warrior for the essential, the true. Around the globe, you prodded, provoked and, teased. Though your ideas and points of view could be argued, explained away, or forgotten, what could not be explained away or forgotten was you, that singularly piercing, provocative, person of you. (ah, now, I hear you laughing)

But whatever the world heard or knows or remembers of the warrior you were, the warrior for the essential in all things, what the world did not know or even see was how you were here in Korea. The thousand ways you touched or spoke, or grunted, or laughed. Your gestures, your giggles, you infinite little kindnesses. Your glance, your glare, your glimmer. These are uniquely ours, those of us who have had the privilege and pleasure of knowing and being with you personally here in Korea. Only those of us who knew you here, could see your true purity, the reality that, as one of your disciples put it, you are the strongest, most delicate being ,

That was the you I knew and am eternally grateful for: You yourself, perhaps the purest human being I have ever known. The one who on my first ten years ago came to my hotel room and offered to help me pack. The one who the one who reached out softly to hold my hand when our first pictures together were being taken, the one who¡¦, and the one who even from your hospital bed when your eyes would not open kept reaching out with feeble hands to feel me there for those all too brief final moments.

It was you the simple man, you yourself, whom I knew and loved most. And will always remember.
